Hear No Evil...

WHEN WE THINK OF TASTEFUL DUB VIBES, BIG BREAKS, LATIN PERCUSSIONS, DEEP DOWN TEMPO...  We come across BASTARD JAZZ, the label from Brooklyn whose first release, “10 for Life” was by its co-founder, Aaron aka Dj DRM.

We were able to chat with him before his show at The Joint Sessions night, hosted by Dj RogerC at Dos Trece (C/Carme BCN) every Wednesday.

“We started back in the Golden Days of Downtempo, with labels like Ninja Tune or Mowax. Around 2000 I was in touch with some artists from Shadow Records (NY) whom weren’t feeling their label were treating them right, so I decided to start a label to put their music out on vinyl.  Our record sales have dropped because of the rise of Mp3, we are up with the times so we release on digital too but we still have big love for vinyl, and so do a lot of our buyers. I feel a lot of Djs are too spoilt now by being able to get music easily; and so they’ve stopped supporting their favourite record labels.

We’ve been around 8 years now, and we’ve never stayed the same, music has changed too...we’re a lot more Dance floor now, which is where I have gone as a Dj. Coming from Florida, I was highly influenced by bass music, Break Beats and Electro when I started deejaying in the late 90s. I’ve had great moments, Granada, Vienna, Santorini, I’ve toured with Nico Venus...always blessed with being able to share through music, I’m totally thankful. I’m influenced by 70s Dub and Reggae music, old Latin, puertorriquean music from the 60s and 70s, older Down Tempo, stuff like Fila Brazilia, and old-school Punk Rock. We like to go from point A to point Z in our sessions, but its always done in a tasteful way.

I never make long term plans, I enjoy every moment. But basically, I like to carry on producing and playing as much as possible. There aren’t really banning laws back home, in terms of loud music. But there are some venues that don’t really want to get a dance floor going, so they ask you to keep it down. Time is the only thing that’s under the law... in the States you only get an alcohol license until 2 am; they may be open longer, but people can’t drink, so venues close around 3 am, 4 am in NY. Even so, I haven’t heard as much about this issue anywhere else in the world, just here...

Food, Music, Love, Friends and family, and enjoying life are the most important things to me, the rest is just completely irrelevant.”
