ENGLISH/ CASTELLANO

Here at the EggBox we are very proud to host one of the few artists from recent years that made his own personal mark so distinguishable in this constantly morphing universe of electronic music.

What We Held On To EP Ghostly International cover by Michael CinaHailing from Michigan and after a few EP’s in 2009, 2010 saw Shigeto refreshing instrumental hip hop, first with 2 EP’s (tip: one of them is ‘What we held on to’, free to download from Ghostly’s website www.ghostly.com) and then he made it clear with Full Circle, his debut album, which had a huge reception. After that came the remixes, gigs all around the world and then Lineage, his second album in what seems to be a trilogy of sorts waiting to be finished (according to his own words).

He blends several moods on his productions, with great care taken over percussion; soothing atmospheres, vivid melodies, hugely colourful and rhythmic and a very special one for your headphones, filling all the frequencies with his own vibe all around them, you can tell it’s a Shigeto song from the very beginning. And same as he completely warms your headphones, he turns on and heats up dancefloors. I got the chance to catch up with his last presentation at Paradiso, Amsterdam, and witnessed the way he drives people crazy with such an intense performance, drums included, showing his skills to dig into his own stuff and delight both ears and bodies.

All these are the reasons why I wanted to interview and feature him here. Lovely sounds, check it out yourselves, and enjoy the ride.

ENGLISH

Which would you say were your highlights of this last year on the road?
Man, so many good things over the last year. I'd have to say, two things: First was opening for Dabrye and Madlib. That was a dream. After that was opening for DJ Krush at Decibel Festival.

You're having some of the gigs around Europe with Selfsays, is this the first time you're touring together? How did the relationship start?
Self and I have known each other for a while. We were both in Michigan making music but met through mutual friends. That tour was the first time. Good times for sure.

Being from Ann Arbor seems to have influenced you a lot, after reading about annual events you used to make there with your brother, and then naming some of your music 'vann arbor' and so on, I guess those days were special, which would you say were the main aspects of that place that marked you?
I guess I'm just lucky to come from a place I love. Michigan in general will always be home for me, in fact, I'll be moving back to Michigan (Detroit) in the next couple of months. My best friends, musical influences are mostly there. I feel like I grew up surrounded by a really unique group of people there. Ghostly started there. Detroit gave birth to Motown, Iggy and the Stooges and techno. Jay Dee (Jay Dilla for the younger heads) for goodness sake! Now we have artists like Mayor Hawthorne, Samiyam, Danny Brown and countless others who have come from there. Growing up there was the best music school I could have gone to.

On Lineage's artwork you included pictures from your great grandfather, Shigeto Ohmura, and you've had some early releases under the alias Frank Omura, I understand that's also a reference family name, could you explain its origins?
Ohmura was my family name on my Grandmother's maiden name. Frank was my Grandmother's husband. Frank Ohmura was a combination of the two for an old techno alias of mine.

Are you going to release music under that alias again?
Not looking to but if someone wanted to put it out I wouldn't be against it by any means.

I've read that you went on producing electronic music due to the fact that drumming gave you chronic tendonitus, but then after a while you sat on the drums again. Are you getting better your arms conditions?
Yes. My tendonitus made me unable to play drums for about 7 or 8 months. I started producing during that time but never left them. They are still my main instrument and almost always included in my live sets.

Have you changed your approach to composing throughout time?
The use of acoustic and other external instruments is what's changed the most in my composing. I used to write all within the computer. Using my own sounds but not recording audio into it. Just sampling myself. Now live instrumentation plays much more of a roll. I played Rhodes on almost every track off Lineage and most of what I've written since. I can't really write outside of my studio these days because they have become such a key part of the sound.

Have you got into any other artistic expression besides music?
I love food. If I wasn't in music I'd have some sort of tapas bar or cafe, maybe with a small selection of records. Who knows. I really like taking pictures. I Don't consider myself a photographer though. I'd love to have a really nice camera though and learn one day.

What's the latest good stuff you've heard?
Love the new Liars and Shabazz Palaces.

As a last question we'd like to know what are your future plans so far. Anything in the vaults to be released?
My "Make it Boom" remix for Wajeed is coming out in September. Been excited to get that one out there. I have a project with Devonwho that we've been sitting on for a long time and we are gonna try and have out soon. Plenty of other things but too early to announce anything as of yet. Cheers.

CASTELLANO

Spread The Love
