Now, many of you will be looking forward to Sonar Festival with star attractions such as New Order, Fatboy Slim, The Roots and Lana del Rey all out in force. As with any festival however, Sonar is about far more than what goes on when the sun goes down. One of the charms of any festival is wandering around during the day and chancing upon something quirky, but even better is knowing what others don’t and what things to look out for. This is the thinking behind Relevant’s Alternative Guide to Sonar 2012:

1) Fancy having your mind blasted away by visual bamboozalage? Tim Wright’s ‘8 Switches’ seeks to do just that, unleashing waves of monochromic wrath on your unwary retinas. Screened on Thursday and Saturday at 15.30 and Friday at 14.00 and 20.00, this is not one for those nursing hardcore delirium tremens.

2) Opera? Rap? Virtuoso piano solos? It seemed an audience in Vienna was expecting none of the above from Chilly Gonzales and his orchestra. Pity the fools. This 90 minute film, click here for times, displays this fellow’s unique talent. It really is immense stuff.

3) Sonar Pro is always looking for the next big thing in music technology. This year the Pacemaker and the Novation go head to head in order to showcase the next Dj’s plaything, both seeking to add portability and ease to electronic music production. To see them together on Saturday complete with DJ demonstration, go to see the Pacemaker at 14.00 and the Novation at 16.00.
