This Egg Box episode is a very special one for me; what we are about to introduce are some of the most buried sounds hidden deep in the vaults of modern music and deserve to be brought to more like-minded ears.Igor Bystrov, better known as Parks, is a professional trombone player who was raised in the sunny little town of Sochi, located in the wild Russian countryside. He later established himself in one of the most beautiful cities ever built, St. Petersburg.
I accidentally found him through a little french web-radio, and it got stuck in my brain but fortunately it will stay there, like the memories of a beautiful short story from the golden years of Russian literature.
Parks has 8 albums released, most of them in the 90’s on Russian labels, two of which were recently re-released for the first time outside the Russian Federation through the great label, Infraction Records. Every sound he makes has its own perspective, his own distinctive touch, its own colours, painted all around it.
Talking about the mix itself… Modern-classic songs, breath-taking ambient landscapes, astounding IDM structures, shoegaze… this is an essential music lesson that you should not miss.
It features artists like Brian Eno, legendary GAS, Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood together with one of the most original polish composers -Krzysztof Penderecki-; some of Parks' beautiful gems including one unreleased track (yeah!) and an extremely special one featuring with one of the most brilliant poets ever. This is a must-check mix for every proper electronic music lover.
Beneath there is an interview with the man himself and you’d be surprised by the origin of his name. You will also enjoy the only remix he has made so far which we are publishing exclusively on The Egg Box for the first time ever and we are glad that he gave us permission to share it.

You once told me about a gig you had as Parks in Petersburg in 2001, how was your setup back then?
Then I played with Portostudio and a Roland JV synthesizer, I didn’t like it that much.
Have you considered playing live again?
I do not want to play at a concert alone, but I haven’t found a partner yet.
It's been a while since the re-release of Hidden on Infraction Records, are you working on any new material?
I'm writing a new album, already made 5 tracks for it.
Tell us about the mix you've done for The Egg Box.
It’s the music that I remember being impressed with recently. I was very fascinated by the album Krzysztof Penderecki / Jonny Greenwood and listened to it without looking up from the beginning to the end… awesome music.
The Max Richter track features Marina Tsvetaeva reciting a poem, have you read her works? Could you name some other artists outside the world of music who have influenced you?
I haven’t read Tsvetaeva that much, but there are some poems that I really like. She is truly a Russian poet. During my life, I’ve been influenced by many writers like Herman Hesse, Julio Cortazar, Vadim Shefner, Dostoyevsky, Leskov, and Tolkien.
Film Directors: Terry Gilliam, Kubrick, Pierre-Paul Renders, Tarkovsky, G.Danelia etc... This is a great list.
On your last (and first ever) podcast 2 years ago, you introduced a track from your son, who was 15 years old back then. Did he continue working on music? How does he feel about his father’s music?
He still writes music, but I have not picked any of his tracks for the mix because he is involved in the techno-dub style now. It didn’t fit for the kind of music I mixed for the EggBox.
Max (my son) likes my music and understands it, and I am very happy with that :-) I didn’t specifically teach him, I would like him to choose what he wants to do, and what kind of music to love. He has formed a good taste for the arts.
You used to play trombone back in the days; do you still perform any instrument?
In order to achieve my musical goals I am picking up any instrument without fear but I still play trombone professionally. I studied at the Trombone Conservatory.
I saw your feature on the Steve Brown reads John Keats - The Day is Gone and Other Sonnets with a remix of Song Of Opposites, is this the only remix you've made? I worked with Tuxedomoon, when they came to St. Petersburg. I worked on the mix and mastering of their live album. Then I made a full LP of Tuxedomoon remixes. This was supposed to go to the Neo Acustica label (a good friend of mine owns it) but some difficulties showed up and the album never got released as a third party was against the publication.
The only remix that was ever published is the one that you mentioned. And in 2010 a collaboration with Julien Dyne got included in a Sony BMG compilation for Germany: Kulturkantine.
Which artist would you like to remix? And by which artist would you like to be remixed by?
That’s a very good question; I'd really like to do a remix for Lisa Gerrard or Brendan Perry. A remix of my music? Burial or Gas, definitely.

Igor Bystrov, mejor conocido como Parks, es un trombonista profesional criado en un soleado y pequeño pueblito de la Rusia salvaje, luego establecido en una de las ciudades más hermosas: San Petersburgo.
Directo desde el corazón de la Rusia que aún sobrevive el mundo acelerado en que vivimos, cada sonido que Parks crea tiene su propia perspectiva todo alrededor. Lo encontré accidentalmente a través de una pequeña radio online francesa, y desde entonces se ha quedado en mi cerebro, afortunadamente nunca se irá de allí, al igual que los recuerdos de un bello cuento de la época dorada de la literatura rusa.
Parks tiene 8 álbumes editados, en su mayoría en los 90's a través de sellos rusos, dos de ellos fueron reeditados por primera vez fuera de Rusia a través de Infraction Records.

Alguna vez me contaste sobre la única fecha que tuviste en vivo como Parks, en 2001. ¿Cómo era tu setup en ese entonces?

Es la música que me ha sorprendido recientemente. Estuve fascinado con el álbum de Krzysztof Penderecki / Jonny Greenwood, lo escuché de corrido de principio a fin... increíble.
Has incluido un track de Max Richter, con samples de Marina Tsvetaeva recitando un poema, ¿Has leído su poesía? ¿Has sido influenciado por artistas más allá de la música?
No he leído mucho a Tsvetaeva, pero algunos de sus poemas me gustan mucho, fue una verdadera poeta rusa.
A lo largo de mi vida he sido influenciado por muchos escritores como Herman Hesse, Julio Cortázar, Vadim Shefner, Dostoyevsky, Leskov, y Tolkien.

En tu último set (el primero que has publicado como Parks), presentaste un track de tu hijo, quien tenía 15 años en ese entonces. ¿Él ha continuado con la música? ¿Cómo siente la música de su padre?
Aún escribe música, pero no he usado sus tracks para este set porque se encuentra sumergido en dub-techno, no encajaba con el tipo de música que quiero mostrar.
Max (mi hijo) gusta de mi música y la entiende, y soy muy feliz por eso. No le he enseñado cosas específicas, me gustaría que elija por su propia cuenta el camino a seguir, he desarrollado un muy buen gusto por el arte.
Solías tocar trombón en el pasado, ¿Aún ejecutas algún instrumento?
Para alcanzar mis metas musicales, intento ejecutar sin miedo cualquier instrumento, pero profesionalmente sigo tocando el trombón. Estudié en el conservatorio del trombón en Petersburgo.
Vi tu participación en el álbum "Steve Brown reads John Keats - The day is gone and other sonnets" (http://www.discogs.com/Steven-Brown-Reads-John-Keats-The-Day-Is-Gone-Other-Sonnets/release/1601630) con un remix de Song Of Opposites. ¿Es este el único remix que has hecho?
Trabajé con Tuxedomoon cuando visitaron Petersburgo, hice la mezcla y mastering de su álbum en vivo, entonces hice un álbum de remixes para ellos. Esto tendría que haber salido por el sello Neo Acustica (propiedad de un buen amigo) pero algunas dificultades se presentaron, y el disco nunca vio la luz, un tercero en discordia no quiso que se publique.
El único remix que se ha editado es el que figura en el disco que mencionaste.
¿A qué artista te gustaría remixar? ¿Y por quién te gustaría ser remixado?
Una muy buena pregunta; Me encantaría hacer un remix para Lisa Gerrard o Brendan Perry. ¿Un remix de mi música? GAS o Burial, definitivamente.
