11 people were killed when the rig blew up, which has resulted in four presidential visits to the area (to date), $1.6bn has been invested by BP in clean-up and a further $20bn compensation provided by BP for people whose livelihood has been affected.Compare this with 15,000+ people killed in Bhopal by Union Carbide, a US company, which resulted in 0 presidential visits, no clean-up and $470m compensation finally given by the courts last month after 25 years of the company and its successors fighting in the Indian courts not to pay it.
-£20bn compensation has been demanded by the US government and given immediately by BP as compensation, compared to the $7bn the US government paid out in total to families as a result of 9/11.
-A $2.6bn dividend was cancelled by BP to its shareholders as a result of the oil spill. In contrast, a $1bn dividend to shareholders of Transocean, the owners and operators of the Deepwater Horizon rig, was approved one month after the accident.
-$20bn compensation was paid out by BP immediately to US victims of the disaster, compared to the $45m compensation paid out by the US oil firm Trafigure to 30,000 victims of toxic waste dumped by them in the Ivory Coast after a four-year legal battle.
-While US senators are now happy to call BP “British Petroleum” in their hearings (a name it has not been known as for over 10 years), they neglect to mention that the percentage of UK-owned BP shares is 40% and the percentage of US-owned BP shares is 39%. -The company contracted by Transocean to do the final cement filling that occurred just before the blast was Halliburton. Until recently it was run by Dick Cheney and as I speak is trading up 0.76 at $25.74.
